Copilot StudioIn-depth course on the standard harness
Connect an internal operations agent to an external maintenance system. Build the full path from a fault report with a photo to a work order created only after the user approves it.
From fault report to work order
The course follows a real maintenance case. The agent reads information from an image, verifies the equipment in an external system, retrieves fault history and shows the result to the user. After the user approves the details, an agent flow creates the work order in the external system.
- 01Prepare the agentCreate the solution and configure instructions and file uploads.
- 02Read the fault imageUse a prompt to extract an equipment plate and fault code from a photo.
- 03Verify the equipmentConnect to an external API and confirm which asset the report concerns.
- 04Set priority by ruleUse a topic to assess impact and criticality through fixed rules.
- 05Retrieve more via MCPBring in fault history, available technicians and spare parts from the maintenance system.
- 06Approve and createShow the details in an adaptive card and create the work order in the external system after user approval.
Let agents work with your systems
When a fault is reported, the details are often spread across different places. In this course, the agent collects them in the conversation, checks the equipment against the external system and retrieves more details from it. Once the user approves, an agent flow writes a work order back to that system.
You see how Copilot Studio can connect to an operational system while keeping important decisions under your control. Priority follows your rules, and the user approves before the agent creates anything.
After the course you can
- Connect an internal agent to an external API and MCP server
- Combine image interpretation with verified system data
- Control priority and work orders through rules and approval
For teams connecting their systems
This course suits teams with clear case workflows where internal and external systems need to work together. You want an agent to retrieve information from an operational system and write back to it, while rules and approvals control key steps.
This course suits
- IT and automation teams connecting external systems
- Operational teams with clear rules for cases and approvals
- Consultants building Copilot Studio agents for clients
Prerequisites
- The Copilot Studio foundation course is not required
- No programming experience is required
- Familiarity with digital workflows helps with the exercises

For an introduction to the standard harness, see the foundation course. There you build an internal IT support agent. Want to work on longer tasks where the agent has more freedom to plan and carry out the work? See the GitHub Copilot harness foundation course.
Questions about the in-depth course
No. We start with the course environment and build the agent from scratch, then work with more types of tools and integrations.
No. The course includes a test system. If you want to use your own system, we first need to review access, APIs and the data the agent may handle.
The fixed lookup verifies the asset before the process continues. The agent then uses MCP to retrieve details such as fault history and available technicians.
In the course flow, the user reviews and approves the details before the agent flow creates the work order.
